Love Mussel

Television (Full Length) – 2001

In this mockumentary Kevin Smith probes a town that smells riches, thanks to a shellfish: a geoduck (pronounced gooey duck) with aphrodisiac qualities. The quota is owned by a local couple, but big business, officialdom and local Māori all have their own ideas. Smith gets caught in the crossfire. Writer Stephen Sinclair (Braindead, Russian Snark) and director Michael Hurst satirise everything in sight, including the media, Kiwi towns and Smith's hunk persona. The rich ensemble cast includes Whale Rider's Vicky Haughton, and a hilariously rabid Jackie van Beek. Read more about Love Mussel — and Kevin Smith.

Love Mussel turned out to be a rare thing — local satirical comedy that was both comic and satirical. ... as a comedian he [Kevin Smith] put his Me Tarzan good looks to even better use. Thanks to him, a lively script and deft directing, Love Mussel was a good, honest laugh.
