Mānawatia a Matariki (2022 hautapu broadcast)

Television – 2022

The mid-winter rising of the star cluster Matariki signals the new year for many Māori. Aotearoa first began recognising Matariki as a public holiday in 2022, with this ambitious live broadcast kicking off the new national celebration. Beginning at dawn, hosts Stacey Morrison and Mātai Smith lead a five-hour broadcast hosted at Te Papa museum, featuring entertainment, kōrero (discussion) and education on Matariki's meaning. The varied slate includes panel discussions, speeches (including Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern) and musical performances from Maisey Rika, Ria Hall and Louis Baker  to name but a few.

Today is all about sharing: sharing mātauranga, ancient knowledge and culture; sharing kai, and also sharing the aroha, because this is a day for all New Zealanders.
