Musician and teacher Pearl Runga shows Neighbourhood around her home turf of Hornby, introducing families who've also made it their home. Members of the Japanese Society of Canterbury talk about the power of origami to create peace and hope after the 2011 quake, while a Zimbabwean family showcase musical instruments — and how they're used to channel ancestors. Neighbourhood also visits a studio where Filipino folk dancing is taught to the next generation, and an Egyptian woman who shows her love via cooking. Runga also shares her experience of growing up Chinese Māori with sisters Bic and Boh.
My dad was Ngāti Kahungunu. He was stationed in Malaysia during the Vietnam War, and he met my Chinese mother and brought her back here where all three of us were raised.– Presenter Pearl Runga on her whakapapa, at the start of this episode
