After the demise of The Mint Chicks in 2010, lead singer Kody Nielson partnered with Bic Runga, played in his brother Ruban's new band Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and launched the short-lived Opossom. Influenced by everything from jazz, lounge and Pacifica to 60s pop and psychedelica, he wrote and performed most of the material himself (with contributions from his father Chris and Runga). The sole Opossom album Electric Hawaii was named Best Alternative Album at the 2012 NZ Music Awards. Since then Nielson has recorded both under his own name, and as Silicon. Opossom are not to be confused with 70s German group Opossum.
