Arriving on Kiwi television screens on 19 April 1972, Popco slotted in after Movin’ and before Norman, as part of a long tradition of music shows made in Christchurch. Featuring cover versions of the hits of the day, it showcased the Maggie Burke Dancers and vocalists — who usually sang live — including Bunny Walters, Annie Whittle and Rob Guest. There were also overseas acts like Lindisfarne and Gary Glitter (who, overcome with vertigo, was rescued from a diving board after miming a song). Popco was aimed at the under 25s. It was the first Kiwi music show to screen in colour.
