Popco

Television, 1972–1975

Arriving on Kiwi television screens on 19 April 1972, Popco slotted in after Movin’ and before Norman, as part of a long tradition of music shows made in Christchurch. Featuring cover versions of the hits of the day, it showcased the Maggie Burke Dancers and vocalists  who usually sang live  including Bunny Walters, Annie Whittle and Rob Guest. There were also overseas acts like Lindisfarne and Gary Glitter (who, overcome with vertigo, was rescued from a diving board after miming a song). Popco was aimed at the under 25s. It was the first Kiwi music show to screen in colour.
