In 2016 New Zealand YouTube successes Viva La Dirt League were awarded funding from Skip Ahead, a 50/50 joint venture between NZ On Air and YouTube, to create original narrative series. Known for their gaming-based humour, the Viva La Dirt League trio leaned into their strengths to create Rekt — a ten-part comedy centred on a team of underdog gamers, competing in an international esports competition. The show was created and written by Alan Morrison, Adam King and Rowan Bettjeman, with director duties shared by Morrison and King.
