Shadow in the Cloud sees director Roseanne Liang indulging her passion for action. Shot in New Zealand, the movie is set largely inside — and underneath — a B-17 bomber. American Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, Suspiria) plays a WWll flight officer who boards a plane leaving Auckland. Exiled to a turret dangling under the plane, she finds herself battling gremlins, other planes, and a sexist flight crew. Shadow in the Cloud won praise for its action, feisty heroine, and plot twists. Variety called it an "insanely entertaining high-altitude horror movie". The Wrap praised the film's "boisterous B-movie energy".
...I don’t think anyone can predict what it is. It’s not a superhero movie, even though it’s got a superhero-type character in it, it’s not a period drama because it’s set in a world war. It’s something else altogether.– Director Roseanne Liang describes Shadow in the Clouds, The Spinoff, 18 July 2020
