Student and "meme queen" Abigail Leonita Masengi heads to Palmerston North in the fifth episode of this Chinese cooking series. She is shown around by local Jess Wong, who co-produces the show. The main feature of their adventures is the roasting of a whole pig in an earth oven. This can be a risky process, but "that's where the art comes in". The community turns out for the feed, including Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon. Masengi also visits a local dumpling shop, learns how to make mooncakes (the tricky traditional way!), and enjoys a meal from a Chinese-Māori chef on his family marae.
For my thirtieth birthday, instead of having a birthday cake I had a birthday pig and there was a candle on top.– Jackson Wong discusses the tradition of pig roasting in his family
