In this 2017 short film, a sensitive young boy learns to stand up for himself after discovering a dark family secret. Set in 1960s New Zealand, Sparrow includes many flashback sequences to Anzac troops fighting in World War II. It was written and directed by Welby Ings, whose subsequent feature film Punch included many of the same themes of boxing, father/son relationships and homophobia. Ings is also a designer, and led the distinctive production design of Sparrow which is present throughout his work. Sparrow enjoyed an international festival run, including festivals in India, North America and the United Kingdom.
