Lyricist, musician and sound recordist Nikora Edwards, aka Swizl Jager, was born and raised in Tauranga. His music falls into urban and hip hop categories, but his earliest inspiration was metal. Jager mixes te reo Māori and English lyrics, calling this combination his "reo rua" raps. His 2023 Waiata Anthem 'Hīnaki' is an example of this approach. Jager aims to reach a mainstream audience with his bilingual flow, showcasing his culture while reaching those with only a basic understanding of te reo Māori. Swizl Jager compositions have featured on a range of TV shows including Find Me a Māori Bride, Ahikāroa and The Brokenwood Mysteries.
