Te Karere

Television, 1982–ongoing

Running for more than four decades, Te Karere is a daily news programme in te reo made by TVNZ. It covers key events and stories in the Māori world, and brings a Māori perspective to the day's news. Significant for pioneering Māori news on mainstream television, it has been a platform for Māori to comment on issues and events. Founded by Derek Fox, the programme's origins date back to Māori Language Week in 1982, when Fox read short te reo news bulletins before the prime time news on Television One. In 1983 Te Karere got its own regular slot. Initially it ran for only four minutes, then 15; in 2009 the show was expanded to a half hour.
