Writer/director Andy Conlan's first feature is about Ronny Roman, a broken-hearted illusionist (played by Conlan) who is desperate to use his 'mystical powers' for a career comeback. Conlan has a background in illustration, and The Last Magic Show uses elements of picture book storytelling, theatre and animation to tell Ronny's tale. The cast includes Michael Hurst (Hercules) as seedy agent Trevor Norton, Matt Sunderland (Out of the Blue) as Ronny's lonely flatmate, and Lucy Wigmore (Shortland Street) as his quirky neighbour. Cinematographer Duncan Cole won an NZ Screen Award for his work.
I think we shot 23 days. It's just a distant, blurry, sleep-deprived memory now.– Cinematographer Duncan Cole on shooting The Last Magic Show, Onfilm, July 2007, page 22
