The Neighbours were formed when Wellingtonian Rick Bryant packed his saxophone and headed north to jam with Sam Ford-led Ponsonby outfit Local Heroes. ‘The Only One You Need’ was from the 1982 EP of the same name. The band were thrilled when director Gaylene Preston called on favours to shoot three linked videos for the EP, filming on the West Coast. This Keystone Cops-style clip has Bryant (somewhat slyly) playing a constable under the spell of vocalist Trudi Green; meanwhile a robbery is going on. Bryant later formed the Jive Bombers.
We drove into Blackball in the midst of a South Island tour —there in the main street of this tiny town were vans, trucks, cranes, you name it! The Blackball Hilton, which was to be our base for the week was buzzing. All these people were there to make our video — professional film people who weren’t being paid. The street was full of vehicles and gear — all loaned, not rented. The whole week was a triumph of enthusiasm and cooperation — that’s "the power of Gaylene". It was one of the highlights of our long careers.– Sam Ford and Trudi Green recall making three videos with director Gaylene Preston, NZ Musician
