In this series, Anglican minister and historian Hirini Kaa (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongowhakaata) looks at how the earliest Māori biblical prophetic movements were impacted by key events like the Treaty of Waitangi. This first episode explores Ngāpuhi tohunga Penetana Papahurihia (aka Te Atua Wera). Papahurihia was a respected tohunga and early convert to christianity. Reverend Kaa and those interviewed attempt to understand the struggle of a man forging a new path between two seemingly irreconcilable worlds. The Prophets was directed by Tainui Stephens (Let My Whakapapa Speak).
Alongside the celebrated Māori leaders and warriors of our history, there exists another group of remarkable men and women; they were visionary and courageous and led Māori through times of massive upheaval in Aotearoa … do their words still have impact today; will they guide us tomorrow?– Presenter Hirini Kaa
