Tonight at Nine was launched in 1975, as Television One faced competition from newly launched second channel TV-2. Television historian Robert Boyd-Bell has described it as New Zealand's "first serious effort at nightly current affairs" (previous Kiwi current affairs shows, like Gallery and Compass, generally screened once a week). The wide-ranging show required major resources; it was soon cancelled. The reporting team included Simon Walker and Sharon Crosbie. Fred Dagg (John Clarke) provided a number of comic sketches.
