Lawyer, artist, and former Green Party co-leader, Metiria Turei gives her first major interview since leaving politics in 2017. In this relaxed chat series, host Toby Morris and Turei converse whilst completing artworks on the theme of "old lady super heroes" (at Turei's suggestion). Illustrator Morris opts for a sketch, and textile artist Turei cross-stitches. Turei talks openly about her life, from early days in activism, her new life as an artist and her former career in politics. She doesn't shy away from discussing the Green Party, including her radical, and highly controversial, confession of historic benefit fraud in 2017.
...there was a big surge in unemployment after Labour's economic reforms in the 80s. That was the politicisation process, if you like, for me ... like trying to understand how law and politics affects ordinary life. Unless people are talking to you about this sort of thing, or you live in that environment, it's really hard to see how those things are connected.– Metiria Turei
