You drink a lot, eh?– The boy (Kayden Ngapera) challenges a homeless man (Greg Smith)
Writer-director Lauren Porteous and the Cool Story Bro crew made a drama so professional and painfully relevant to New Zealand, it’s almost jarring not to see the Film Commission logo play before it. Under the Bridge touches on a topic deeply rooted in this country. In a way, it’s disturbing that a film of this quality and sincerity could be made so intuitively as if homelessness in New Zealand is as well understood as rugby union. In other ways, it’s beautiful that filmmakers can demonstrate such an impulse for cinematic compassion that they didn’t have to wait for months to develop the story, get the funding, and a schedule for the production.– Reviewer Liam Maguren is bowled away by Under the Bridge, The Big Idea, 16 November 2017
It’s a film that changes what 48Hours could be. It’s no longer just a celebration about what can technically be achieved in a weekend; it can be a platform to address immediate issues.– Reviewer Liam Maguren on Under the Bridge, The Big Idea, 16 November 2017
By FAR my favourite film out of all the heats I went to. As a few people have mentioned, 'Under the Bridge' feels like something that was made with more time and money, and that would be found playing at the NZIFF. A beautiful, heartbreaking story that isn't afraid to take on social commentary.– AL Stevens reviews the film, on the 48Hours website
I think the reason that you get involved with the 48 is because it's like free school ... There's really no cost, other than your health — like I said, you barely sleep. But you learn so much and if you're really keen on being a filmmaker, then you should really learn by doing. And the more you can get your content out there, and the more you can be less precious about it ... the better. The 48 is this amazing broad, equalising platform...– Director Lauren Porteous, on the HP 48Hours podcast, November 2017
One of the most touching and impressive shorts I've seen at 48Hours in a long, long time. Although the start feels like it's pulled themes from Hunt from the Wilderpeople, it manages to shape a witty, unique and engaging piece that isn't scared to tackle current housing issues within Auckland. Congrats on making such a beautiful piece in such a short amount of time.– 'Kermath' reviews the film, on the 48Hours website
Definitely the first goal was to make a good film. and challenge yourself and have a great time.– Director Lauren Porteous on her aims in enterting the 48Hours contest, on the HP 48Hours podcast, November 2017
