Award-winning writer/director Miki Magasiva (The Panthers, We Are Still Here) makes his feature debut with Tinā (Samoan for "mother"). Samoan music teacher Mareta (Anapela Polataivao) is plunged into grief after losing her daughter in the Christchurch quakes. Mareta takes a relieving role at an elite private school, where she inspires her students to perform at a big choral competition. In this trailer Mareta faces a condescending interview at Saint Francis, and her growing relationship with "spoiled, rich kids" annoys a family member. Tinā was chosen to open the 2024 Hawai’i International Film Festival.
I’ve played many Pacific Island mums ... and Mareta faces unique and significant challenges in the film. Without expecting it she starts her healing process– Actor Anapela Polataivao on her central role in drama Tinā, The NZ Herald, 7 October 2024
