Waiata Anthems aims to preserve and promote te reo Māori through the universal language of music. Since 2019, the project has supported the release of 100+ songs in te reo. In 2021 Waiata Anthems founder Dame Hinewehi Mohi partnered with director/producer Julia Parnell to launch an accompanying series. Over two seasons on TVNZ+, the show has captured an array of artists discussing their songs and personal stories of cultural disconnection, reclamation and courage, as their music is translated into te reo. The musicians include Annie Crummer, Bic Runga, Che Fu, Don McGlashan, Hollie Smith, Katchafire, Kora and Lorde.
