Women

Television, 1977

In 1977 this groundbreaking documentary series delved into issues pertinent to New Zealand women’s lives. Over six episodes it covered topics from domestic violence to Māori women, marriage and mental health, women’s sexuality, childcare, and women's representation in the media. Everyday women from a diverse range of backgrounds share candid personal stories, with insight from female experts. The series was made by a feminist filmmaking collective led by Irish-Scot Deirdre McCartin. The crew were almost entirely female — including future Once Were Warriors producer Robin Scholes, and camerawoman Margaret Moth.
