Shot in modern-day North Canterbury, Netherwood is the kind of back country thriller in which few of the locals can be trusted. Black-hatted drifter Stanley Harris (one time Shortland Street surgeon Owen Black) arrives in a small South Island town, and finds himself facing off against the local bully (Will Hall), the local beauty (Miriama Smith) and the local land baron (Peter McCauley). The documentary follows producers Black and Hall and director Pablo Araus on a 20-stop rural roadshow, as they tour their self-funded feature around New Zealand and do a spot of adventure tourism along the way.
... the reason we did it was to meet the people, and see face to face what people thought of the film. It was just phenomenal, an overwhelming response to the film. And I think people really did appreciate that we had made the effort and had come to see them. We went to some pretty small places, quite a rollercoaster ride the whole thing ...– Director Cristobal Araus Lobos on touring Netherwood around New Zealand
