Whare Taonga - Te Pā o Parihaka

Television (Full Length Episode) – 2012

This episode of award-winning te reo series Whare Taonga visits Parihaka in Taranaki, a Māori spiritual community who were raided by British colonial troops in 1881 and suffered violence, imprisonment and dispossession. The community's kaitiaki (guardians) promote its legacy of peaceful resistance through the conservation of their marae, including the Victorian era meeting house, Te Niho O Te Atiawa. Interviewees include kuia Whero Te Rangi Bailey, who celebrates the strength of the Parihaka elders. English subtitles can be found via the 'CC' symbol at the bottom of the screen.

Taranaki is the mountain, Taranaki is the eponymous ancestor, Taranaki is the tribe: the spring from whence we came.
– Taranaki kaumātua Mahara Okeroa, early in this episode
