Whare Taonga - Te Pā o Parihaka

Television (Full Length Episode) – 2012

This episode of award-winning te reo series Whare Taonga visits Parihaka in Taranaki, a Māori spiritual community who were raided by British colonial troops in 1881 and suffered violence, imprisonment and dispossession. The community's kaitiaki (guardians) promote its legacy of peaceful resistance through the conservation of their marae, including the Victorian era meeting house, Te Niho O Te Atiawa. Interviewees include kuia Whero Te Rangi Bailey, who celebrates the strength of the Parihaka elders. English subtitles can be found via the 'CC' symbol at the bottom of the screen.

Due to an influx of Māori sympathetic to their passive resistance, Parihaka became the largest Māori community in Aotearoa. It became a haven for the dispossessed of the country.
