The Dino de Laurentiis/David Lean film did eventually get made, Roger Donaldson came in and replaced Lean. It was the same project, but different director in the end.

I saw this ship in Sydney Harbour in 2004, and have a few photos of it. According to Wikipedia the ship is now in Hong Kong Harbour. In any case it is an interesting tourist attraction.
