In 2020 Troy Kingi released The Ghost of Freddie Cesar. The deeply personal album featured songs based on "memories or approximations" of a tape made by his muso Dad who went missing in 2005. 'All Your Ships Have Sailed' is immediately nostalgic; a funky, slinky song Kingi says is "part me, part Freddie". The video touches on the musician's parental quest symbolised by a mysterious and powerful cassette. Kingi, keeping the 70s vibes alive in his kaftan and shades, slips into a dream state and assumes multiple roles: including a policeman and a criminal. The song won Kingi a songwriting Silver Scroll.
It feels like I am the only one who knows who the hell this guy [Freddie] is. Everyone I’ve spoken to does not know anything about this guy. Finishing the album... it was definitely something to do with my Dad as well. It’s not letting him go, it’s just being at peace with where we are at right now.– Troy Kingi on his personal quest to learn more about his father, Radio New Zealand, September 2020
