Apple Pie

Film (Trailer and Excerpts) – 2016

If you wish to make apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.
– Quote by American astrophysicist Carl Sagan, which helped inspire the film
On December 28 1987, during a routine NASA space mission, the three astronauts aboard the space shuttle decided to stage a sit-in, to protest the inhumane mission scheduling ...the three astronauts took it upon themselves to quote 'contemplate the universe, and become more inclined towards humanist feeling'.
– One of the narrators
The film is an absorbing, playful rumination on scientific patterns across our galaxy, from the atomic to the astronomical.
– Critic Matthew Hutching, in a Newshub review of Apple Pie's first NZ Film Festival screening, 18 July 2016
Shot on 16mm film, Apple Pie’s pleasantly fuzzy images and occasional prog rock evoke a retro, even mystical feel — a messy vintage vibe. But Hamilton’s grasp of quantum physics is commendably firm. This is not the output of an artist pretending to be a scientist; instead, it is art inspired by science.
– Pantograph Punch critic Janet McAllister, 25 July 2016
