Presented by Tom Bradley with Penelope Barr on weather, Breakfast News consisted of a complete wrap of overnight events from New Zealand and around the world in the form of a standard TV news bulletin, drawing on the resources of the TVNZ newsroom and international news providers via satellite, such as the BBC and ITN.
Breakfast News screened five mornings a week on Channel 2 as a half hour bulletin at 7am, with a five minute update at 8am, until the end of 1989. The half hour bulletin was soon and replaced during 1990 by five minute bulletins at 7am, 7.30am, 8am and 8.30am with John Hawkesby replacing Tom Bradley as anchor.
In addition to Breakfast News, Channel 2's morning schedule consisted of kids' shows - particularly cartoons and Sesame Street. Many of us as Kiwis used to turn on and tune in to Channel 2 for morning news and kids' shows on a weekday during that time.
