Ed is correct, it wasn't Muldoon that abolished the sales tax, however the 1984 Labour government - Roger Douglas did announce a reduction of the sales tax from 40% to 20% in the November 1984 Budget, and GST was passed by Parliament in 1985 and came into effect the following year.

"The 1981 Muldoon government abolished the 40% sales tax on New Zealand records. I like to think that 'Culture' played a small part in that."
Actually I believe it was the 1984 Labour government who cut the sales tax from 40% to 20% (and subsequently to 10% with the introduction of GST in 1986).

"We stamped the artwork with the word Culture?, bundling the CDs and inserts into plastic sleeves..." Surely you mean vinyl? CDs weren't around in 1980.

Great b from the p.

The Steroids released a wonderful song called 'Sign of the Times' about a child molester which despite You Tube & the like is still devilishly difficult to locate. One classic that can be found though is Sticky Filth's anthem Weep Woman Weep.

Great blast from the past! I remember seeing on the TV1 news @ the time when the Knobz invited Muldoon to one of their live gigs. When asked what he thought of the gig, Muldoon memorably quipped it had about as much culture as On The Mat!
