Episode One
We are introduced to Mike Bungay QC, his troubled wartime childhood, colourful rise as a lawyer, first two wives, and his many pecadillos. A walking disaster to many and a genius to others, he would become one of the most flamboyant and outrageous characters of New Zealand legal history.
Episode Two
Bungay finds himself with the case of a lifetime, as he defends Queen Elizabeth Arts Council chairman Bill Sutch (David Aston) for a charge of spying. Bungay annoys his legal partner Ian Grieg (Arlo MacDiarmid) by squeezing in a murder trial (of Esther Solvoll) at the same time. Meanwhile Bungay's relationship with his wife Beverley [Kate Elliott] is in decay.
Episode Three
Bungay's fame grows with a book due to be published, and further high profile cases —including defending gynaecologist Erich Geiringer on sexual assault charges, and doctor David Minnitt for shooting his wife Leigh. Bungay's years of hard drinking and an intense workload come a cropper with a heart attack. Bungay is forced to slow down, but the line of women waiting to visit him in hospital indicates his personal life still needs attention.
Episode Four
In 1981 Bungay takes on a gang violence case, while writing a book with broadcaster Brian Edwards. He hears news of a family bereavement. Bungay is persuaded to stand as a candidate for the New Zealand Party, backed by Bob Jones. After making a speech, he meets the married Ronda Morgan (Sally Stockwell) and sparks fly. Bungay uses the defence of automatism in the case of mother Pamela Arnold, who is accused of killing her child.
Episode Five
While defending small time Auckland criminals Richard Morgan and Alister Barry on murder charges, Bungay starts to woo Ronda Morgan and encourages her interest in the law by offering her research work. Morgan accompanies Bungay to Auckland, but the famous defence lawyer's chequered personal history causes problems in their fledgling relationship.
