I was at the South Pacific hotel at the bottom of Queen Street, Auckland a couple of days before the election. While I was waiting for my cab in the morning, Muldoon barrels out of the elevator and marches across the foyer heading toward his Ford LTD parked outside. A policeman stationed at the hotel door salutes the PM. Muldoon is driven off. Obviously a student of the polls, the policeman then turns to those of us watching and says "thank God thats the last time I will have to salute that little prick"

Rob Neale was the reporter and his piece stands up even today as a pretty slick effort. Muldoon did top off the hotel (the then Regent, now Stamford Plaza) and then topped himself up even more at the old TVNZ Shortland St studio.
