Fantail

Film (Trailer and Excerpts) – 2013

A fascinating and brave film anchored by Sophie Henderson’s Kidman-esque performance ... Curtis Vowell’s direction lends a refreshing lightness to a story that both embraces and critiques New Zealand culture, and what that term actually means.
– Writer Sam Brooks on website Lumière, 1 August 2013
Fantail feels like one of the freshest New Zealand films to come along in years ... It's very easy to picture an international audience embracing this film — the insights, performances and mood are all world class.
– Reviewer Dominic Corry in The NZ Herald, 5 August 2013
I'm not very good at saying no to a dare. You know if someone dares me I'll do it. I think it's my extreme background.
– Dean (Jarod Rawiri) feels a bit off after agreeing to drink multiple cans of V
Fantail was a monologue that I had to do in my third year at drama school, and I think that first idea came from my love of Māori myths and legends — and my hate of retail. I’ve also got two little brothers — one was being pretty naughty — and that was the drive for the piece.
– Sophie Henderson on the film’s genesis, in a 1 August 2013 Lumière interview
Fresh, appealing characters written with insight and affection ... It’s funny and dark and sad, and I predict this local low-budgeter will connect with an enthusiastic audience.
– Listener critic Helene Wong in a list of her top five picks at the 2013 NZ International Film Festival
I've given this four and a half stars. This just knocked me completely on my butt. ... the acting talent is absolutely stunning ... you can tell it's a passion project.
– Reviewer Sarah McMullan on Radio New Zealand, 6 June 2014
