Mitch (Hayley Sproull) aced her journalism degree — so to be back in small-town Crawdon chasing 'news' stories for her mother's newspaper while working at the dairy is a bitter pill to swallow. Younger brother Tama (Boy's James Rolleston) is a bona fide big deal, an All Black boy wonder whose every move is celebrated by proud locals, not to mention Mitch's rugby-mad family. In this pilot, Mitch works on an expose of Tama, with help from the local celebrity snooper (Chris Parker). Golden Boy was one of a series of five comedy pilots which screened on Three. It was one of two shows chosen to become a series.
It's a comedy about this 26-year-old woman who is trying to feel important, yet she's kind of being swallowed up by the celebrity of her little brother. She comes back with all her brilliant ideas, and she's trying to change a town that doesn't need or want to be changed.– Director Jackie Van Beek on the premise of Golden Boy, The NZ Herald, 13 September 2018
