Goodbye Pork Pie
Film (Trailer, Excerpts, and Extras) – 1981
Goodbye Pork Pie was a sensation, definitively proving Kiwis could make blockbusters too. Gerry (Kelly Johnson) steals a yellow mini in Kaitaia. Heading south, he meets John (Tony Barry), who wants his wife back, and hitchhiker Shirl (Claire Oberman). Soon, trailed by cops, Invercargill is in their sights. High on hair-raising driving and childlike joy, the trio became folk heroes. Check out behind the scenes interviews, and the featured excerpt of Gerry trying to escape Wellington. As Richard King writes, the film relied on ingenuity and hard work. A 2017 remake was directed by Matt Murphy — son of Geoff, who drove the original movie.
