Intersexion

I remember once playing with something like a girly toy and my mum said “You’re not supposed to play with girly toys”, so I said “Hey? Why Not?” and my mum said “We’re supposed to raise you as a boy”.

My parents were told they couldn’t tell what sex I was and that they should just take me home, dress me in yellow and green, give me a nickname and wait and see.

This is something no-one ever talks about. Every new parent of an intersex child is faced with a situation which they believe is a rare medical emergency. As one of our interviewees says: ‘intersex isn’t uncommon, it’s just unheard of’.
