I've just realised how isolated this place is. I'm a long drive from Ghadames, which is a massively long drive from Tripoli, which is a once-a-week plane flight to London, which is on the other side of the world than my home which is New Zealand. I really feel like I'm a long, long, long way away from home.
– Jeremy Wells on getting off the beaten track in Libya
I'm fascinated by the fact that this guy took over the country when he was 27 in 1969. He doesn't call himself the president or anything like that; he's called the Leader of the Revolution. He's written books, he's got female bodyguards, and he's a very, very wealthy, powerful man who's been through so many things. Hated by the West, called ‘The Mad Dog of the Middle East’ by Reagan in the 80s, had his children killed by American missiles that were fired in 1986. He is a fascinating man.
– Jeremy Wells on Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi
It's the warmest temperature I've ever experienced by a long, long, long way. It's kind of like being in an oven.
– Jeremy Wells on the sweltering heat of the Sahara Desert
I've noticed the last time I spoke to a woman was four days ago . . . This country is like one giant sausage sizzle, and by sausage sizzle, I mean just men only. You see Libyan women occasionally, but not really.
