Who is singing on the night road, when only the scared owls can hear him? It is Jack Winter: rabbiter, swagman, and station rousabout. Sixty-eight convictions for being happy in a public place.– Narrator Mervyn Thompson
Aye let him be. A sweet man sober, but he's a tiger when he's roused ... Never fear: the devil looks after drunks and fools.– Barman Webfoot Charlie (Bernard Kearns), after The Dane (Norbert Heuser) wanders off outside looking worse for wear
Several of the crew and cast claimed some sort of connection with Baxter and his writings. Patric Carey, who plays the part of Jack Winter, was founder of the Globe Theatre in Dunedin and staged a cycle of seven of [James K] Baxter's plays in 1967. Bernard Kearns, in the role of Webfoot Charlie, narrated the NZBS production of the radio play which was broadcast in 1958.– Diana Ward in Art New Zealand 14, Summer 1979
