It’s like a little town. Their bedrooms are like their house and the corridor is like the street, so even though people are living in common, they’re not really living in common.
– Co-director Nick Mayow, interviewed for The Wireless, 27 June 2014
Rest homes are places most people will have a connection with at some point in their lives and we both experienced it recently, having our grandparents move into homes. We felt as film-makers, rest homes are environments that speak volumes about the place of the elderly in our society and reflect how we live and age in New Zealand. With Today we wanted to create a sensory film, one that immerses the audience in the experience of this environment and a film that reflects the truth of this environment in all its complexity.
– Prisca Bouchet and Nick Mayow
New Zealand idealises rest homes and idealises the life of the elderly. A lot of people are very uncomfortable with facing up to the grim reality of things. So I thought it was important for us to show the situation truthfully.
