Although we were a small country, proportionately we had the largest contingent. In fact although there was, as I said, a maximum of 700 at any one time, per head of population compared with the other forces we were by far the largest. Once the South Vietnamese understood that, they then had a different outlook on us.

My eldest brother ... was posted to Malaya and had to go to Burnham for training prior to moving off to Malaya ... He convinced my younger brother to join him so the two of them were in Burnham together and they said "c'mon Tom, why don't you join us?"

I guess one of the saddest sights that I witnessed was the Americans sailing away on their ships ... as they waved goodbye to Vietnam. You thought well, was it all worthwhile? But we knew as professional soldiers that we were just doing a job and we kept our feelings to ourselves.
