Eventually a Gestapo bloke came along … and he came to interview me and he bashed me up a couple of times and knocked me off my chair and gave me a cigarette and wouldn’t light it. I got so mad I shoved the cigarette into his face and he got upset about that.– John Wilkinson
The Italians caught us when we got to the beach, bashed us up and gave us a pretty good hiding. And luckily a German officer came over the sand dunes and spoke perfect English, and said ‘come with me.’– John Wilkinson
