I was really scared about planes; I’d seen too many shot down.– John Wills
As a matter of fact the Germans couldn’t run the war in the desert and neither could our jokers. We’d get right up to Benghazi and up there and run out of supplies and then they’d chase us all the way back, then we’d get supplies and chase them all the way back. We went up and down two or three times.– John Wills
He was lying down on the sand with a blanket over his head and I said 'there are five planes and they’re coming straight for us'. He said 'where’s the first bomb dropped?' I said about a mile away. He never bothered to push the blanket off his face to have a look. When the Germans dropped bombs one seemed to follow the other. So it wasn’t worrying him. Some jokers were very cool.– John Wills
