Initially it was quite interesting, all these tracers flying by like fireflies. Well we were firing our rifles from the hip as we did a ragged charge up this hill.

Us drivers, as we didn’t have anything to drive, we were converted to pack mules and once the battle started that was our job to lug .303 ammunition up to the forward rifle units.

...and then Aden. I think we were the last troops allowed ashore there for the large part of the war. We had a lot of Aussies with us and I think they were mainly responsible for raiding a lot of the shops.

I was digging a slit trench in front of my truck in the village, and a shell landed about two feet from the end of the slit trench where I was. But nothing happened. It was the wet ground, it just buried in and nothing triggered.
