Men Shouldn't Sing represents one of New Zealand's rarest cinematic species — the full-length musical. Seven strangers are trapped in confinement, where they keep bursting into song and dance whenever their emotions get the best of them. The movie both celebrates and sends up the clichés of musicals, where people are more open in song. The final zombie human dance-off involves everything from tap dance to ballet. A light-hearted making of documentary covers the film's growth from a small production into a "huge, 200 volunteer, massive two year long event". A 47-piece orchestra performs much of the music.
