Millie (Ana Scotney, from Cousins) is on the fast track to success. She's due to take up an internship at a prestigious New York architecture firm, but after an acute bout of anxiety she abandons her flight and panic sets in. Millie is adrift in hometown Wellington, trying to hustle cash for another fare. On Instagram, she pretends she has made it to the Big Apple and is loving her life. Millie Lies Low is the first feature for award-winning writer/director Michelle Savill (Ellen is Leaving), whose own stomach-churning airport episode inspired the central idea. The film was invited to the Berlin and South by Southwest festivals.
I really like exploring the tragedy and comedy of everyday life, how we laugh and cry all at the same time. I wanted to see how far someone would go and how far we could push her psychologically.– Writer/director Michelle Savill on the main character in Millie Lies Low, The Hollywood Reporter, 10 February 2022
