Millie Lies Low

Film (Trailer) – 2021

I really like exploring the tragedy and comedy of everyday life, how we laugh and cry all at the same time. I wanted to see how far someone would go and how far we could push her psychologically.
– Writer/director Michelle Savill on the main character in Millie Lies Low, The Hollywood Reporter, 10 February 2022
My first thought was that I’m just gonna have to hide for three weeks and pretend, because everyone knows I’m going. I was just horrified and had this feeling of acute shame.
– Michelle Savill on her own experience of missing an important flight, The Hollywood Reporter, 10 February 2022
I just remember thinking that that captures the essence of the film. When we shot that scene, because of [Ana Scotney’s] performance, I could see that the film was going to work.
– Michelle Savill on the scene where Ana Scotney posts fake 'happy selfies', The Hollywood Reporter, 10 February 2022
Shame and the desire to project an image of something you’re not is at the heart of Millie Lies Low, a sad but fully relatable film from director and co-writer Michelle Savill. It’s a small-scale story that confronts psychologically dark themes with compassion and honesty, even if it’s uncomfortable for the viewer to watch as the likeable protagonist continues to dig a deeper hole for herself with lies and deceit.
– Critic Louisa Moore, Screen Zealots website, 6 April 2022
From goofy grins to anxiety-ridden wide eyes, Scotney’s range and talent is clear: her comic timing and commitment to Millie’s mania are exemplary...
– Critic Tara Judah, Screen Daily website, 14 March 2022
Getting a film made is always tough and memorable, but the added challenge Covid brought pushed it into another realm of difficulty that I’ll never forget. But there were good times that I’m so grateful for ... Seeing everyone dig deep and give all they could was very humbling.
– Writer/director Michelle Savill on Covid-19 closing down production three days into the shoot, Flicks website, 18 October 2021
