The first ever episode was transmitted on Tuesday 21st March 1972 at 4.43pm, and thereafter every Tuesday and Thursday at approximately 4.30pm. Approximately, because the TV schedule at that time was not pegged to programme slots. Transmission was in black and white. We recorded 'as live', so it was an exhausting schedule for cast and crew. The programme's success owes a great deal to the talented presentation by Waric Slyfield and Janet Milne who presented nearly all of the programmes in the first year. The toys came from BBC Play School with the exception of Manu, who replaced the UK character Hamble.

The NZ version of Playschool was produced and directed by David Istance from 1972 until 1975 from AKTV-2's Shortland Street studios in Auckland. The first presenters were Janet Milne and Waric Slyfield who were later joined by Ray Woolf, Val Lamond, Campbell Hegan and a number of others. I was the floor manager and we produced four episodes once every fortnight for screening twice a week. During Easter 1975, Play School moved to Dunedin where it was produced until the series finished. Romper Room started in 1975 in Auckland and was presented by Cathy Schofield before eventually moving to Christchurch.

@Genevieve: we do have a list of presenters on the Play School series page: http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/play-school-1975-081/series_credits. We wouldn't claim it as 'complete', but it's being added to all the time (and role-periods refined) as profiles etc are written. Feel free to suggest additions! Cheers,

Would be good to see some of the early presenters from 1975. I recall. Ray Woolf was an early presenter. I was presenter for a time in 1977 and recall Larghan and Katherine were both presenting in that time.
