In this special episode Shortland Street celebrates Te Wiki o te reo Māori (Māori Language Week) by using New Zealand's native language in a major storyline, and displaying subtitles in te reo Māori and English. In this excerpt teen Tillie Samuels (Tinihuia Lee-Lemon) puts her hand up to lead a cultural performance, and has a tender moment backstage with Arepa Dewes (Paku Fernandez). Chris Warner's art collection is threatened at a boozy nurses' lunch and Madonna (Marianne Infante) feels guilty about letting loose. Back at the performance, proud dad TK (Ben Mitchell) watches his daughter shine.
To celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2021, not only will Shortland Street tell a complete story predominantly in te reo, but for the first time, we will also subtitle the entire week of episodes in the language,– Producer Oliver Driver, in a September 2021 press release
