Sidewalk Doves was released shortly before Steve Abel's 2016 album Luck/Hope. It was written once the songwriter watched a rough cut of his friend Florian Habicht's feature Love Story. Habicht's award-winning film is a quirky 'true life' romance which rides high both on his love affair with a woman carrrying cake (Masha Yakovenko) — and with the city of New York itself. Abel's ramshackle ballad is matched with scenes from Love Story; bohemian lovers wander the streets of downtown New York, ride the subway and encounter a gallery of locals who all look like they have tales to tell.
I was in New York recording when Flo was conceiving the film in 2009. When I saw the first cut of the film I went home and wrote this song in an instant. It’s a super simple kind of frivolous pop song.– Musician Steve Abel on writing Sidewalk Doves, NZ Music Commission website, 6 November 2015
