I was 16. Watching Split Ends was a bit surreal. New Faces tended to reinforce the impression (then) that NZ was a nation not terribly in search of a 3rd dimension - for something to add to the black and white. So Split Ends seemed a revelation of cosmic importance. New Faces was a program designed to produce another Ray ( People are People whatever they eat for breakfast) Columbus, or maybe another Allison (I've got hair) Durbin. To this day I will never forget Phil Warren's condemnation of the band as 'too clever'. I would have throw my Eskimo Pie at the screen, but I only got to eat about three a year back then in far out cosmopolitan Blenheim.

Around 1969 my dad was going to move us all to New Zealand... Never did! Dang! Had to wait 'til 1980 to see "Split Enz!" They were amazing!

I remember this as a 13 year old. It was stunning, and blew me away, it seemed so different and advanced.. my mum thought I was mad. And went on to see Split Enz many many times.. The gig at nambassa was incredible.. and I also recall a gig at main street where they did about a million encores. Mental Notes is still the best NZ Album ever, probably will always be.
