I played with Bill during the 70s in the "Greytones" band led by Thomas Grey. He was reluctant to play the steel and preferred to play electric guitar. But we managed to get him to play steel, one bracket each night. He often surprised us, as on one occasion without warning, he launched into "American Patrol", a song we had never played before. It was hair-raising, but we managed to follow him. To my mind, he was the best steel guitar player I have ever heard worldwide, and I have heard a lot - Red McCabe.
