Pai mārire was the first Māori religion based on the bible to have a nationwide impact. It was an attempt to distinguish Māori christianity from the dogma of missionaries. This religion, with it’s principles of goodness and peace, was a sanctuary for a Māori people who were finding out that war with Pākehā did not bring victory.– Presenter Hirini Kaa at the beginning of episode two
